Lighten Your Complexion Naturally

Complexion issues is a big thing amongst so many people all over the world. The Caucasians with white skin are tanning to get darker, the Asians with yellow skin wants to get whiter while the Africans with dark skin want to become yellow. In an ideal world we would all be content with the color of our complexion...but we all know we are not in an ideal world.

Whether its right to change or alter ones complexion is a very controversial topic, especially amongst black women who believe we should love our dark skin and kinky hair. Personally i love my natural toffee brown/caramel complexion and do not intend to alter it, but as we all know we are unique beings with unique opinions. Therefore i am of the opinion, since a lot of people would still go ahead to lighten their skin no matter what anyone says, it is better to educate them on the safe way to do so in order to reduce their health risk to the barest minimum. We all know one, two or three close friends or family who bleach their skin and you know nothing you tell them would ever make them stop.

Until recently all skin lightening/bleaching creams and soaps contained now-known- to-be-harmful ingredients like, Hydroquinone, Mercury, Steroids etc. These chemicals are very detrimental to the health of the user on the long run leading to health issues such as kidney failure, cancer and skin thinning/burn amongst others.

Instead of using these dangerous chemicals, there are safe and natural lightening ingredients that can be used which would give same desired result.

Examples of Safe & Natural Skin Lightening Agents

Glutathione: This is one of the most prominent components of skin bleaching soaps. How does it work? It plays an important role in curbing the process of melanin synthesis by preventing the reaction of tyrosinase and L-DOPA (taken in through various foods in our daily diet) which bind together for synthesis. Thus, the production of melanin in the skin is reduced and the skin appears fairer. Skincare products with Glutathione LIKE THIS SERUMS or through supplement and most effective way of using Glutathione for skin is with Vitamin C tablets like THIS

Papaya: The papaya fruit contains the enzyme papain. This enzyme helps in two ways - exfoliation and renewal. It helps to exfoliate dry and dead skin cells. After the skin exfoliation, it then helps in rejuvenating fresh new skin cells. Papaya products would lighten and give you a lovely glow like the Silka Papaya Whitening Lotion  though not as fast acting as some lightening products, it would lighten you with consistent use. Using a papaya enriched soap like Asantee Papaya soap , Likas Papaya Lightening Soap or Silka Whitening Soap  etc releases anti-oxidants and acts as a skin moisturizer and keeps your skin soft.

Black Licorice:
Many skin whitening soaps use pure black licorice extract in them. Black licorice contains glabridin, which is an excellent bleaching agent for highly sensitive skin. It helps in getting rid of hyper-pigmentation. It has anti-inflammatory properties and hence, is non toxic. This means it reduces the production of melanin in a totally safe and irritation free manner.

Green Tea: Green tea is also a good ingredient for skin whitening. It contains huge amounts of vitamin C. This vitamin C helps in preventing too many melanin pigment cells from getting accumulated in one place. This helps in inhibiting the occurrence of freckles and spots on the skin.

Kojic Acid: Kojic acid is also one of the popular ingredients used in skin whitening lotions like these Kojic acid products helps not only as an agent for skin bleaching but also as a remedy for skin conditions like melasma, cholasma, etc. which are characterized by discoloration of skin. It also helps in preventing hyper-pigmentation. Kojic acid in soap requires a little longer to get absorbed into the skin. Hence, the soap needs to remain on the skin for a while before being washed off.

Mulberry: This skin lightening ingredient is extracted from the roots of the paper Mulberry bags plant. Mulberry is said to be a lot more effective than hydroquinone and kojic acid within the sense that significantly lower concentrations are needed to have the same impact as higher concentrations of kojic acid and hydroquinone.

Alpha Arbutin: Alpha arbutin features a stronger effect than beta-arbutin and is also commonly found in skin lightening goods as a safer alternative to hydroquinone. I love this Serum with Arbutin

Beta Arbutin (Bearberry Extract): Commonly known as just arbutin, is derived from the leaves of bearberry, cranberry and blueberry plants. It works in a similar way to kojic acid, in that it inhibits the production of tyrosinase to restrict the amount of pigment developed. Although naturally derived, it can cause skin irritation in some folks with sensitive skin.

Vitamin A (Retinol): It is a raved anti aging treatment in the skincare industry, also referred to as retinol or tretinoin like this Retinol Serum increases the rate at which skin cells are renewed. Accelerated skin cell turnover means that the brighter, youthful and glowing skin underneath is revealed. Anyone above 30 years old need to include retinol in their skin care regimen. And they are safer to use at night as a night cream like Radha Retinol Cream

Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide): Niacinamide, also referred to as nicotinamide or Vitamin B3 has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It really is an effective topical skin lightener and works by inhibiting melanin production within the skin. Vitamin B3 is located in some skin whitening products and sun screens but it's also possible to get Niacinamide capsules where the contents may be applied directly towards the skin. Get one of these B3 Serums

Vitamin C: At concentrations of about 10% and above, Vitamin C works to suppress the production of pigment within the skin but most importantly it kills free radicals that causes breakdown in collagen. L'Ascorbic Acid or Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a derivative of Vitamin C and this is the form that is commonly found in skin care products.Vitamin C is more potent when used in serum form like Azure Naturals Vitamin C Serum or Insta Natural Vitamin C Serum. In addition to skin lightening, other advantages of Vitamin C include not only antioxidant effects but some studies also demonstrate anti-inflammatory and photo-protective properties.

If you must lighten your skin tone several shades there are 3 things you must NEVER forget to include in your regimen.

1. Sunscreen/Sunblock
2. Deep Moisturizer
3. Exfoliation

      Skin lightening works when these processes are religiously followed;

      a. Exfoliate
      b. Moisturize
      c. Lighten
      d. Protect (sunscreen SPF 40 and above)

  11. Any natural products with Licorice, Mulberry or Papaya should be safe So read labels carefully. What you actually need most now is moisture so you can stick to shea butter, cocoa butter, grapeseed oil, almond oil, vit c serums and vit e oil.

    1. EXFOLIATION: Buy a good bath glove for your body, Buff Puff or Clarisonic Mia for your face. Get a good Goat Milk body wash and cleanser for your face (if your face is oily then 2% salicylic acid is better). When exfoliation go harder on your knee, feet and elbow.

HYDRATION: You can never go wrong with natural oils and butters for serious skin moisture. Shea butter,Cocoa butter, Grapeseed, Almond and Coconut oils are some of my personal favs.

Lastly try and avoid the sun when you can, and use a Sunscreen with zinc oxide and high spf (45 upwards). Neutrogena is a good brand.

    2. Thank you very much. Truth is I can't find d arbutin soap or d neutrogena spf or even d buff puff in port-harcourt. So please I would be coming to lagos very soon, say in 2weeks. Is there any place wer I can get all these at a stop. Also if I use the arbutin soap to bath.how does d goat milk wash come to play.

  20. I stumbled across your blog today. I have been trying lighten my complexion face and neck. My face is about complexion of Jennifer Hudson and my neck is considerably darker, which make me feel so inseure and unattractive. I wanted to see if you could recommend some products for me. I used Tri-Luma for years on and off as prescribed by my dermatologist. It worked GREAT! I would lighten my face 3-4 shades during the summer within 2 months, but if I stopped using it my face would again become darker. I stopped b/c I wanted to improve my health. I detox several times per year. I eat vegan 1 week per month. I've tried Vivant skin bleaching gel, which is ineffective. I wash with Carol Daughter's products (no parabens), tone, and moisturize. I use a SPF of 35 sunblock from Sephora. I exfoliate with Burt's Bee's exfoliante and a Dermatologica rice bran scrub weekly. The skin bleaching gel is not nearly effective as the tri-luma. I am 36 years old.

Can you help me PLEASE by telling me how and which products I can use to naturally lighten my complexion 3 shades without the harmful chemicals?

  25. Hi Onome, I would like to say THANK YOU for sharing your passion for maintaining color beauty, I live in America and I have very sensitive skin. I just turned 40 in may, I'm too darn old to have acne but I do and I wish it would go away. I'm very self conscious. Would you/Could you PLEASE help me. I have a caramel skin tone but I have dark spots on my face (and a few on back), but my face bumps up at the slightest touch of my hands. I contantly wash my hands but my face still bump up. I get oily in my t-zone and once I wipe its like I bump up. Then they'll appear with a little pus in them and become hard, and of course, I pop them. I know I shouldn't but its almost like popping them will make them go away, they go down but then the dark spots appear. My skin is sooooo sensitive I need help bad. I'm embarrassed and EXTREMELY SELF CONSCIOUS because of this. Oh, also, at times, my face will clear up and be bright and clear and blemish free and literally, a couple days later the sensitivety rears ts ugly head!! And in closing, I've used so many products and I've even gone to a dermatologist and medicines and regiments work for a short while, then its back to the "as I would call it" severe break outs. PLEASE HELP ME WITH A REGIMENT THAT'LL STOP THE BREAKOUTS AND CLEAR UP MY FACE!!!! Thank you Lady Onome!!!

And its very expensive. So if u have the money then u definitely gonna get lighter with the injections naturally within months. But u need to go to a professional though to be safe. Good luck with your lightening journey!!

  63. Hello onome.am dark skinned and I want to get lighter in complexion but not in a bleached way.I mixed Johnson baby lotion, fair and white serum, funbact A,and a greedy rose water, expecting to get lighter on time.do you think this mixture is good enough?

    1. Funbact a contains steroids an should not be used for extended period. Doing so would have adverse effect on your skin.

Hope the fair and white serum does not contain Hydroquinone?

    2. Hi Onome, I am thinking of using the Silka papaya whitening lotion and I want to ask a few questions about it.
I am naturally fair as I can see from my laps but my regularly exposed parts are darker due to sun exposure. I also have very dry skin.
I want to know if silka papaya is good at moisturising and also if the sunscreen, SPF6 is adequate. If not what do you recommend? And does it have any side effects?
I don't want to bleach, I just want to even my skin colour. Thanks.

  64. Hi onome, pls I used to be dark, am presently using carro white cream mixed with demalise oil and carro white soap, but sometimes I'll be very fair while sometimes (1) I'll become a bit dark while still using same mixture of cream and soap, expercially when is about few days to finish the cream. (2) I skin is thin with green veins. Am 33 pls what should I do? Am thinking of using just castol oil cus am tired of all dis chemicalised product. But am also afraid dat using just castol oil will get me dark. Pls can u recommend a natural product I can use that very iffective and fast

  65. Pls can I make use of she's butter mixed wit funbact A on my body?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Funbact A is a triple action cream, containing ANTIBACTERIAL, ANTI-FUNGAL, and ANTI-INFLAMMATORY and also contains STEROIDS.
It SHOULD NOT be used for an extended period of time.

Abuse of creams like FunbactA, Skinheal, Epiderm etc is not good for your skin or health in the long run.

    1. Hello Imaobong,

Did you use a corticosteroid cream (tube creams normally ending with 'Vate' or 'Sone') or Hydroquinone lotion?

Your description fits that of normal skin damage caused by the extended use of these creams. And reversing this damage takes time and effort.

first you need to stop the cream and get a PH balancing cream like Sebamed face cream and get a good Vitamin C 1000mg tab. Use these for at least a month to reset your skin.

Do let me know how it goes.

  67. Hello Onome, I used to have acne and someone introduced me to epiderm, it really worked for my skin so I continued using it religiously, the problem now is that I have black patches at both sides of my face, it is really embarrassing and affecting my self confidence, I have stopped using it now, please what can I use to get my skin back? I used it on my face alone, now I have a naturally light body with a dark pigmented face, please do reply.

    1. Hello Busola,

Epiderm cream is a topical corticosteroid and should NEVER be used for an extended period of time. Abuse of this drug can cause acne, excessive hair growth on the face, skin thinning and darkening amongst others side effects.

To treat the dark patch you need to apply Vitamin C serum on your face followed by a good sunscreen lotion during the day and followed by coconut oil at night.

    1. Hello,

Have you used CookieSkin products? I have heard great reviews about it.

I do not have personal experience with lightening pills so I can advice for or against. Please do your research properly before going into it as light skin is not worth ruining our health for. Like I always say "Health before Beauty".

  70. Plz Onome, my whole body is itching. Everything was fine until I bought and used silka soap which I have been using before. It might be that I bought a fake one lately. Someone gave me Asantee papaya soap and magic white lotion to use. I am using the soap now(a day though) but I am still afraid to use the lotion. Do u think I should go on with them or do u have any to recommend for me plz. My whole body is really itching.

    1. Hello Joan,

You might be reacting to a fake soap so its good you stopped. For the time being please stop using sponge for your bath and use coconut oil only to moisturize till the itching subsides. If this does not help please visit your doctor.

Have tried so many lightening soaps and creams; gluthaitone products and d rest but it appears that on continual usage, i become fairer and when i quit the appearance becomes worse on my face (more darker). i resorted to perfect white soap which somehow lightened my face but with rash-like pimples. My face is so rough for my liking. Neomedrol cleared most of the pimples but with black spots. Kindly advise on how to clear this black spots and keep my face smooth without gettin darker again.
